What is Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing All About?

Lisa Kudrow, Matthew’s co-worker in “Friends,” tells in the foreword to this memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” that the first question regarding “Friends” by fans is frequently, “How’s Matthew Perry doing?”

Matthew answers this question in this book by providing a blunt account of his decades-long drinking and drug usage struggle. He had spent more than half of his life in sober living facilities or treatment centers by the time he was 49 years old. Unfortunately, his addiction caused a medical odyssey in 2018, which included an exploded colon, pneumonia, a short stint on life support, two weeks in a coma, nine months with a colostomy bag, and more than a dozen stomach surgeries.

The prologue covers most of this. At one point, he writes in parentheses, “Please note: for the following few paragraphs, this book will be a biography rather than a memoir because I was no longer there.”

The memoir is filled with upsetting revelations, such as one about Perry carrying his front teeth to the dentist in a baggie in his trousers pocket (He says, “Yes, all of them,” after biting into a piece of peanut butter toast and having them fall out) and another about short-lived, alcohol-induced sexual trouble.

Perry began talking about his drug use comfortably and then, as he relaxed, at a loudness that permitted me to cease worrying about my recording equipment. When he was 14 years old, it began with Andrès Baby Duck wine and Budweiser and quickly grew to include quarts of vodka, Vicodin, Xanax, and OxyContin. Finally, he set a limit on heroin, a decision he believes saved his life.

There is a lot more in this amazing book about his life full of secrets, humor, and addictions. So Pre-order your book and enjoy it!

About the Author

The author of this book, Matthew Perry, does not need any introduction. If you do not know him by this name, you may recognize him with the name Chandler Bing. Yes, the same Chandler, making you laugh with his incredible humor and acting. This is the first book by the author.

Synopsis & Plot

This candid, humorous, and enlightening memoir from the much-loved Friends actor takes us behind the scenes of the iconic sitcom and into his battle with addiction while delivering a potent message of hope and perseverance.

The captivating narrative starts with the author guiding us on his path from childhood aspiration to celebrity to addiction and rehabilitation in the wake of a serious health scare. Before frequent trips to the hospital and stints in rehab, there was Matthew, age 5, who had to travel from Montreal to Los Angeles, switching to visit his separated parents; while at the age of 14, he is a nationally ranked tennis player in Canada; and 24-year-old Matthew landed a greatly desired role as a major cast member on the buzzed at the time TV show, Friends.

In this Memoir, Matthew Perry reveals — in the heartfelt, humorous, and warmly familiar way only he could tell — about the broken family that raised him, the desire for acceptance that propelled him to fame, and the void inside of him that could not be filled even by the fulfillment of his greatest dreams. He further shares tales about his castmates and other celebrities he encountered along the way, the calm he’s found in sobriety, and how he is concerned about Friends’ pervasiveness. Finally, with candor, self-awareness, and typical humor, Perry describes his lifelong struggle with addiction and what fed it despite appearing to have it all.
