Publisher’s Description

The following three quotes sum up Abby’s relationship with her mom:

“The less of Abby there was, the more Eileen liked it. The more Eileen liked her.”

“Just like pop culture buffs could link any actor to Kevin Bacon in fewer than six steps, her mother could swing any conversation around to weight in just two or three.”

“She knew about the weight-loss drugs, and the surgical options—mostly because Eileen insisted on mailing her links every few weeks, usually with a note attached that said something like Gary and I would be more than happy to help with this”

These three lines spoke to me on every single one, but my mom, who I adore and who is really kind, helpful, and complimentary, has a weight-related fear, and I know in my heart that this is because she wants me to be healthy and happy.

Abby Stern, who is 34 years old, has arrived at a joyful place. True, she still works part-time jobs rather than pursuing a profession, and the flat she has called home since graduating from college still has a fresh paint job. She has good friends, a bike, and a bike club in Philadelphia. She is on pace to marry her childhood love and is happy with her plus-size body most of the time. Abby and Mark met at the weight-loss camp Abby’s perpetually-dieting mother, Eileen, forced her daughter to attend. Fifteen years later, when Abby reconnects with a half-his-size Mark, and finds out that he still adores her, it feels like fate.

However, Abby is unable to get rid of the feeling that something is wrong or the memory of a memorable night she shared with a man by the name of Sebastian two years ago. So Abby is relieved to have time away from Mark and a chance to think things over when she receives a last-minute call to organize a group cycle ride from New York City to Niagara Falls. But on the first day, Abby is startled to recognize Sebastian, the one-night stand she never imagined she'd see again, in the tour group. Abby continues to try to keep her distance from Sebastian despite the fact that he is far from Mr. Perfect and is a serial dater who lives far away. To make matters worse, Abby's mother, Eileen, who Abby blames for a lifetime of body shaming and issues she's still working to overcome, was added to the trip at the last minute.

Over the span of the following two weeks, Abby's beliefs about herself, her mother, and the nature of love are called into question. Strangers turn into confidantes; secrets are revealed; and a young girl with a secret will unexpectedly bring all the riders together.

Conclusion

The Breakaway by Jennifer Weiner was fantastic. Despite some humor, this wasn't a comedy. Weight, self-loathing, settling for someone, abortion, religion, mother-daughter relationships, social media, promiscuity, and many more important subjects were covered in depth. There were both humorous and sorrowful passages. Although I didn't completely adore Lily, I thought that she was incredibly realistic, which was the main factor in how much I loved the novel.
